POP-Punk they say... the term POP has a way of stressing me out... For no reason at all, I've always thought the term was synonymous with mushy, naive songs... But for some reason, I decided to listen to this EP by SKYWAY, a band from Buffalo, NY/USA, and... SURPRISE! It kicks off with “Breakwall” and its pounding rhythm, catchy melodies and pleasant melodic vocals! Well, it's melodic punk-rock, I say to myself! Nothing to do with “POP”-Punk... well, unless it's actually the same thing and I'm the one who's delirious... but don't look for it, you can't contradict an old donkey! So, I'll stick with melodic punk-rock, no objection?
“Swear Jar” hits the nail on the head and defines the style of the band and this EP: it's fast-paced, ferocious and relentless, with a rather hardcore-punk rhythm... I'm surprised and impressed, we're right in the middle of the melodic punk-rock wave of the late 90's and we inevitably think of bands like Millencolin, Pennywise, No Use For A Name... the kind of music that puts you in a good mood, makes you want to put on your shorts and go bang your knees on your skateboard ha!
I really like the balance between the hard-hitting instrumental side and the light, melodic vocals... Throughout these 5 tracks, there's a certain nostalgia for the style of the late 90's, but at the same time, SKYWAY sounds so authentic that you can't help but be convinced by the musicality and first-rate writing - it's bluffing!
I also like the fact that they deal with the not necessarily happy subjects of everyday life, but always with a desire for resilience, to go further, higher... never give up! And that's exactly what they do, and with class, this EP is a little melodic Punk-Rock wonder that sweeps everything off its feet !

Born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" by IRON MAIDEN was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the HEAVY sounds of SAXON, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, MOTORHEAD, Young Fab also discovered thanks to school mates the NOISE, FILTH & FURY of Hard-Core/Punk bands like G.B.H, DISCHARGE, BROKEN BONES but also CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS, FUGAZI... and later on, through the 90's, everything that was ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMENTAL, GRUNGE, INDUSTRIAL (SONIC YOUTH, NINE INCH NAILS, SOUDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS)... Passion & curiosity grew up as years went by ... Fate was SEALED... no turning back ! No Music = No Life !
