"La Mort appelle tous les vivants... La Mort appelle tous les vivants..." Understand "Death calls all the living... Death calls all the living... Death calls all the living..." That's on this haunting intro and these few spoken words that the album begins, just to put you in the mood to come but also to put you directly in your place, the one of a Human who is only a simple mortal.. Put into perspective, everything here below is only futility...
This new opus by BARABBAS, following on from thz excellent "Messe Pour Un Chien" released 7 years ago - plunges us directly into the characteristic style of the band, namely an ultra-heavy, pachydermic DOOM, with undeniable BLACK SABBATH, ST VITUS, PENTAGRAM influences, whose epic strength is equaled only by the despair expressed throughout the seven titles that make it up ! What will surprise you in the first place, if you are not familiar with the BARABBAS style, is first of all this warm and gravelly voice, not very common for the style and which nevertheless works wonderfully, and undeniably brings a very personal touch to the musical identity of the band... and then above all this singing, all in French, impeccable and rich, with a perfect diction... which allows us to better appreciate the texts and their messages pushing us to think about our own condition, our existence and its meaning if there is one... so well illustrated with "Sous Le Signe Du Néant" for example...
Musically, from the first riffs, we feel carried away in a spiral that is as uncomfortable as it is addictive... from which it is difficult to get out, if however we have the will to... The heaviness that emerges from it puts us on the knees, the riffs laminate the spirits, the melodies bring a few respites, but are there only to better plunge us back into this desperate atmosphere... Throughout the 7 titles, it is an alternation of dark, haunting atmospheres, heavy highlighted by leaden riffs, very heavy solos but always interpreted with guts, catchy and tenacious melodies, atmospheres that are sometimes theatrical, sometimes mystical ("La Valse Funèbre"/"Mon Crâne Est Une Crypte") .. So well done, well composed, well arranged that boredom is impossible !
This album is a real cathartic experience... There is like a BEFORE and an AFTER listening, throughout which we question ourselves about the topics covered... We come out different...
BARABBAS imposes itself in my opinion with this album as one of the safest values of the current DOOM scene (not only from France) by the quality of its compositions and its ability to build its own musical identity, which is quite rare among our days... MAGNIFICENT!

Fabien

Born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" by IRON MAIDEN was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the HEAVY sounds of SAXON, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, MOTORHEAD, Young Fab also discovered thanks to school mates the NOISE, FILTH & FURY of Hard-Core/Punk bands like G.B.H, DISCHARGE, BROKEN BONES but also CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS, FUGAZI... and later on, through the 90's, everything that was ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMENTAL, GRUNGE, INDUSTRIAL (SONIC YOUTH, NINE INCH NAILS, SOUDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS)... Passion & curiosity grew up as years went by ... Fate was SEALED... no turning back ! No Music = No Life !
